Chapter 5 main question
“can you please explain to me ...” (he started almost every question with that :-) )
-why R.T* + T.R* = 0
-what is h(z,t)
-what distribution is there in each port when you do “photon number state splitting”
-the connection with the balls and the two boxes
-what is the distribution in each of the ports of “coherent state splitting” and what is the mean
-what is detected and how in de the homodyne detection
-why would we want to know the quadrature fluctuations in homodyne detection
-what would happen is we put a coherent state at the input of the mach zehnder interferometer in stead of a single photon.
-what happen if i send a single photon plane wave to a double young slit
-in the franson interferometer is the state bunched or anti-bunched
-why do we make the time discrete?
-what is the physical case of 1/4*delta_(j-n)k
-how can you explain that by changing phi1 you can manipulated gamma_2 when it doesn’t even pass there.

Part 2 of the exam:
-explain the purcell effect
-why is f smaller than 1 and larger than 0
-what is gamma_e->g
-what is the purcell factor
-what is Q in the purcell factor
-on what does Delta_omega_c depend
-is the equation on slide 249 always valid (the lowest)
-explain in large steps how we found the top equation on slide 249
-what is v²(w_eg, r0) on slide 247
-why can do we only work with d//eg (slide 248)
-explain how we derived the einstein A coefficient, what does it mean, ... (in detail about the formulas, what all factors mean etc.) what is sigma, does it also contain omega, why summation, why integral, ... etc.
-what is a coherent state? when is a state coherent?

Hoofdvraag : strong atom/light interaction
Algemeen ligt er niet veel nadruk op de wiskunde, enkel de resultaten uitleggen is belangrijk.
Vb van bijvragen:
- wat is gamma, wat is de minimale waarde van gamma? Hoe komt dit?
- Atomic polarizability: wat gebeurt er als ik de intensiteit opdrijf? Aan welk effect doet je dit denken ? (Ans: Kerr effect)

-leg kort uit wat het Casimir effect is en welk fenomeen hier aan de basis van ligt.
-wat is een coherente staat, waarom noemen we dit zo?

This year, the students had to prepare a topic at home and present it at the exam.
This first part is closed book and counts for 50%.
I choose the topic about quantum interferometry (ch.5).
I wrote all the derivations of this chapter on the board but he didn't need them. Actually, he wants to know what happens, not the derivations.
One of the question he asked after that was about the phase of the coherent input states. (h1 = h2r)
He asked me of they must be in phase. If yes, is it the enveloppe phase or the phase of the carrier wave that counts....
Because the phase is undefinied in such states, the question has no sense.

After that, I could open my notes and -without any preparation- I had to define the Rabi process and stuff as coherent state and so on...
